Anzac Weekend

This ANZAC weekend is a time of remembrance for those who served, fought, and sacrificed in Gallipoli, but it has evolved over the century to be a time for us to “express sorrow, not to glorify war.” Peace then had been a theme that is now considered and expressed during this ANZAC period, and peace has a strong resonance with the ideals and virtues promoted by Christ.

This engagement in Gallipoli was so long ago. For most of us, we have no real concept of what it feels like to truly be in harm’s way, to truly be in danger, with death a constant and close companion. And yet it was for our peace and our sense of safety, comfort, and freedom, that our war heroes, served, fought, and sacrificed.

As Christ followers, we have a similar responsibility, where we have been recruited and sent out by God preaching His mission of peace, truth, and love. This is just as important, no, this is of the utmost importance, because our engagements have eternal consequences and requires the ultimate sacrifice. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” (1 John 3:16)
