Lessons at the Table
Some of you might have watched the TV series ‘Downton Abbey’ which was quite popular 10-15 years ago. It was set in the early 1900’s during the period of World War 1, telling the story of an Aristocratic family grappling with changing times. I bring it up because there are many scenes of dinner parties which illustrate the layers of etiquette, rules, behaviors and expectations governing these gatherings. It reminded me also of an aunt in Napier who saw fit to try and educate my siblings and I on the arsenal of cutlery that was set before people in formal gatherings, each with a particular use and the ridicule one might receive if they got it wrong.
But more than this was the social dynamics, the unspoken jockeying for status and respect, and the relational interplay involved that seemed to draw people in. I suppose what made the program relatable was that despite the hierarchy, this was a time when the aristocracy was in decline and this family were presented in the frailty of their humanness.
Our passage in Luke 14:1-14 shows Jesus who is invited into a dinner setting. It too was a place where social dynamics, status and hierarchy is played out and the ill-intentioned motivations of the Pharisees and others (probably normalised in their culture), was clearly seen and then addressed by Jesus. Jesus uses this dinner and their conduct to illustrate a spiritual lesson for them, and also for us.
Jesus takes the opportunity to expose motives and to teach them truths that echo well beyond that night so that we might have a greater understanding about humility and compassion. This becomes an invitation to us all to examine the motivations of our own hearts, to recognise why we do things, and generally it is for the recognition and applause of people. Even when we do kindness for others, it can be for the wrong motives.
Let me invite you to read our passage and reflect on what Jesus might be saying to us, what Jesus might be saying to you. Rest in the challenge, examine your hearts, be open to the Spirit’s revelations and may God bless you in your engagement with the Word.
Blessings
