Do You Really Trust God for Today?
I think everyone has at some point in their life wondered if their needs would be met in some way before the day’s end, to the point of being in extreme worry or anxiety. If we’re honest, we’ve all wrestled with worry, even constant worry about having enough of something, maybe about being able to provide for our family, or having a roof, food or maybe just securing our own future. And to make things worse we see others living life with a naïve carelessness and we might even look at them with envy.
Even as Christians we sometimes struggle with ‘lack’ and in trying to address the ‘lack’ maybe we are tempted to compromise God’s standard to get ahead. Yet hopefully we know deep down that compromise often comes laden with guilt, and when we prioritise our own concerns in our pride or selfishness, this often comes at the expense of others. I wonder if this struggle with the worries of tomorrow is not so much due to our lack of resources, but is rather a symptom of our lack of trust in God. Maybe it’s actually that we don’t understand the generosity of our Father, and the importance of our reliance and trust in Him?
This is where the Lord’s prayer becomes more than just routine recitation because in it Jesus does bring attention to our daily needs but He does so in a way that should compel us to confront our reliance on self. And in the same breath, Jesus also couples our daily needs with our relational debts that demand forgiveness.
We continue on this Sunday with the Lord’s prayer, “Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” I wonder how we might think about this so we can be free from the worry of tomorrow, but also the vicious burden of unforgiveness. Take time to sit with our passage from Matthew 6, the Lord’s prayer and may your hearts and minds be open to the Spirit of God.
Many blessings
